Officials in China have suspended a plan to cut the jobs of teachers in the Dandong region. The cuts were aimed at teachers in grade and middle schools but a special stipulation to the rule said that teachers who were single parents would be able to keep their jobs. In an odd twist though, the stipulation led to a rash of divorces with 41 teachers filing for divorce within a one week period. To make a comparison, the province that holds Dandong only had 34 divorces total in 2005. Upon learning of the rash of divorces, education officials immediately called for a suspension of the job cuts and have convinced 39 of the 41 teachers to re-marry their spouses.
