"Jackass: The Movie" or "Jackass: The Audience"???

By W. Anthony Foust

In this article, a small-town theater owner decides to close down for the entire run of the infamous "Jackass Number 2" for two weeks, rather than to make profits from what he considers to be "drivel". (Based on the rest of the article, I assume that is some sort of synonym for garbage, filth, and maybe even smut.)

First of all....BRAVO!

Now, if we could get all the other theater owners to protest in the same sort of fashiion, we wouldn't have garbage like "Jackass" and "Beerfest" in our theaters. I'm not one to say that these movies all-together influence kids to do "stupid" things, because that can mainly be attributed to a lack of parenting. However, when people ask where the class and glamour of Hollywood has gone.....I will point straight to these sorts of movies.

More importantly, we wouldn't be making the immature, ignorant, and possibly drug/alcohol-induced losers who make these movies popular into multi-millionaires. Thus effectively elliminating them from our all-inclusive media outlets rather than posting them up as "talented" role-models for our society to idolize even further.

Is it funny? Well..yes, of course it is. I challenge anyone to watch some drunk moron snort a 1/2-pound ball of wasabi up his nose and puke afterwards WITHOUT laughing and shaking your head. Although, how many people have seen such QUALITY films as "Donnie Darko", "Dancer in the Dark", or "Audition" in comparision to "Jackass"? Films that make you think about life, and the world around us. Films that inspire imagination and wonder. Films that make you feel. According to box-office numbers, not nearly as many, and we wonder why and how our society continues to dumb itself down. Is there something wrong with the fact that these titles would have to be hunted for in a local video store, while the "Jackasses" and "Beerfests" will be mass-produced and displayed by the thousands near the front window??

Naturally, there is protest...as with everything, Hell, I could walk into a pizza parlor and scream, "Everyone likes pizza!", and someone will feel the need to stand up and argue my point. :rolls eyes:

Nay-sayers claim that the theater shut-down directly affected the options of what kids could do for 2 whole weekends. :gasp: My repsonse, what the hell would kids be doing seeing "Jackass" or Beerfest" anyway!!?? I thought they were rated "R"...for audiences 18-years and older only?? Secondly, if the lack of parenting is so prominant that these kids really do feel like they're missing out on life by not being able to reduce their IQ's another 10 or 20 points, is 2 weeks really going to mark to end of civilization as they know it?? Isn't that a red flag in and of itself?

Here's an idea for the kids that are suffering stupidity withdrawals from a lack of such sophmoric titles: Go outside and make your own movies! You might discover that you have an imagination left in that head of yours. If not....then you'll just be forced to eat horse dung for the camera and hope to make millions that way. :sigh:
