It's Official -- Fresh And Safe Spinach To Be Back On Store Shelves

The Mercury News reports that "Salinas Valley spinach was given a clean bill of health Friday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, two weeks after alarm over an epidemic of illnesses emptied local grocery shelves.

"Spinach coming on market next week will be as safe as that before this outbreak,'' said David W. Acheson, a food-safety official with the FDA at a Friday press conference. The FDA issued a warning Sept. 14 telling consumers to stop eating bagged spinach."

According to the LA Times, however, "in a news teleconference Friday, Acheson sounded anything but enthusiastic about lifting the advisory. He took note of the 20 E. coli outbreaks from lettuce and spinach since 1995, nine involving the Salinas Valley."Until some fundamental fixes are put in place in the areas where this contamination is happening," he said, "there is obviously a concern that two months from now we'll be having the same conversation, talking about outbreak number 21."

While the spinach may be perfectly safe, I'm sure it will be a while before all feel quite as comfortable with it as they did before the highly publicized recalls. I certainly will be in no rush to bring bagged, fresh spinach back to my table and it will certainly be a while before I use it raw.
