Is Homosexuality "Normal"?

by Ric Ottaiano
September 11, 2006

I am unsure of many things in life, but what I am sure about is that we are living in a vast cultural and moral wasteland which requires those of us with children to be ever vigilent. The effort of the popular culture to sexualize our kids is an enormous force against which parents must exert at least an equal, and oppositie reaction on a daily basis. Two recent examples.

My daughter who will turn fifteen in a little over three months was given a subscription to Seventeen magazine by some well meaning aunt. I didn’t think much of it until I just happened to pick it up the October, 2006 issue and flip through it. I was shoked by the content, which in my view was more appropriate for women in their early twenties and certainly not 14 to 16 year olds. In the “Health” section of the magazine there was an article entitled “Condoms 101 - What You Need To Know” complete with cartoon-like but very explicit drawings depicting how a condom is to be placed on an erect penis.

There was further explanation that “your guy” may be resistant to condom usage because he is afraid of losing his erection. The solution? Offer to put the condom on for him; it “can be a turn-on.”

Another article posed the question: “Not into hooking up with your guy? Here are some common reasons why that may be the case.” Reason number 5 was “you like girls” and the writer explains:

“Being gay is just as normal as being straight–but since we live in a mostly heterosexual culture, it may be harder to figure out your feelings."

Unfortunately, there’s more. My daughter had one of her classmates spend the night and were in the next room watching television. Since I consider most television available to kids these days to usually be inappropriate, I try to make my presence felt whenever the boob tube is on. So I wander in and have a seat while the girls are watching MTV’s “Next”. This is another one of those reality based, incredibly insipid, dating programs, but it is certainly not “The Dating Game.

The episode I fortunately wandered in on had five lesbian/bi-sexual girls meeting and talking to like minded types about, at this particular moment, whether they had ever had a “threesome” and, if so, was it with three girls or was there a guy involved. At that point, I said very sternly to my daughter and her friend, “Turn that crap off, right now!”

It is the parents’ job to monitor all of this very closely, so I’m not at all inclined to suggest that this sort of garbage programming should be banned. There is a First Amendment, and it is not over-the-air broadcast television, so exercise your right to block the station. But the sexuality discussion is Seventeen magazine, and the “daters” on MTV’s “Next” are all products of the liberal agenda, spawned in the 1960’s, that advocates for the depersonalization of sex and the mainstreaming of all non-exclusively heterosexual alternatives.

The fact is that homosexuality is not “as normal” as being straight, and describing society as a “mostly heterosexual culture” vastly, and deliberately, understates the issue. The obvious effort by the left is to equate sexual preference with, for example, ethnicity so that when America is described as “mostly heterosexual” it is intended to convey the same import as having described America as “mostly white.” Both statements are true, and since no fair minded person would describe being African-American or Hispanic or Asian as “abnormal” logic compels the conclusion that neither is homosexuality abnormal.

Homosexuality is no more normal than pedophilia. No more normal than necrophilia. No more normal than bestiality. Do not recoil from these statements without first at least trying to see the logic. I am not thinking in terms of criminality or social opprobrium. I am speaking in terms of language and fair meaning.

“Abnormal” is defined as deviating from the normal or average; unusual (uncommon, rare). Clearly, being part of only 2-5% of the population makes one uncommon. But that is not my main point here.

All non-heterosexual desires deviate from the sexual norm. This is simply a definitional, and not a qualitative statement. And there are of course differing proclivities, attractions and desires within heterosexuality. However, if a man is attracted to pre-pubescent girls, most right thinking people would consider that particular sexual desire, no matter how biologically or psychologically ingrained, to be one which this civilized society will not tolerate. It is of no consequence that this person has always been attracted to pre-pubsecent girls and that he (or she, for that matter) has not made any conscious choice in that regrard. It is also of no moment if this person, despite his best efforts, cannot control these desires. We leave no room for empathy in this situation.

We look similarly upon those whose sexual desires lead in the direction of, for example, bestiality or necrophilia. There is no concern for whether these urges are “hard-wired” or genetically unalterable. Society expects and requires that they will be harnassed and not acted upon.

The only difference when speaking of homosexuality (between consenting adults) is qualitative. An enlightened society will not stand between the desires of consenting adults, so long as those desires do not injure or abrogate the rights of third persons.

Hence, we do not, and should not, look upon homosexuality as we, for example, look upon pedophilia, but not because homosexuality is simply another “normal” expression of sexuality, but because it does not carry with it the freight that these other variances from the norm carry.

Your opinion is not only disgusting but red necked and arrogant.
There are many different people in this world. Attacking the one's you dont understand is a cowardly way to make an impact.
I notice instead of taking up any action aggainst the teen magazine that was sensibly teaching your daughter how not to contract diseases or get pragnant, or the tv show that talked of sexual exploits you rather attacked a group of people who appeared on a tv show which you quickly turned "that crap off". How much research on this topic have you done before attacking a group of people with thoughts and feelings and emotions?

I believe you are a very selfish man, who has no idea that people arn't just objects.

There is a growing body of scientific evidence which points out that there must be a genetic advantage (superiority) to being gay. Else (male) gays would have been rooted out by natural selection long ago.
The science seems to suggest that gays have stronger sperm cells than heteros (which is why when they do happen to have sex with a woman, their sperm outpowers all hetero men's sperm, and a new gay baby with gay genes is born), that they have better social skills (which is why they get into bed much easier with women), and that they are considerably more intelligent than heteros.

The latter point is obviously true, the low intelligence level of the hetero redneck who wrote the ridiculous article above proves it pretty well.
