IRS threatens to revoke tax exemptions for politically active churches

CNN's Lou Dobbs has weighed in about the ongoing story of the IRS threatening churches that politicking can cost them their tax-exempt status. The IRS' behavior is all well and good -- the government should not sponsor campaigning -- but the bigger problem is, why are churches tax exempt to begin with?

All it does is entangle the government in issues of free speech and religion. There is no reason religious leaders shouldn't interpret their texts in modern political climates (Lou Dobbs to the ludicrous contrary; he argues we should shut the mouths of church figures "constitutionally"), but obviously that's inappropriate if they're getting special treatment from the government. This is religion-government entanglement in the worst sense of the term, as it costs the government money, costs religious figures their freedom of speech and gets both sides of the political spectrum all riled up.
