ILO Reports Slavery Still Being Used In Brazil

A new report released earlier today by the International Labour Organization reveals that slavery is still in practice in the South American country of Brazil. As many as 40,000 people are being worked as slaves in the regions near the Amazon that are used for agriculture. Typically these slaves fall into the range of 18 to 40 and come from poor areas in the northeast but there are always exceptions such as the case of a 13 year old slave who was recently freed. The Brazilian government has been taking steps to fight this problem thankfully. In 1955 the government began to take steps to combat the problem and in 2003 a national plan was enacted. Since 2003, there have been 11,000 slaves set free and over 17,000 since 1995 but the ILO estimates that there are still as many as 25-40 thousand left to free.
