Ice age cave yields valuable treasures An ice age cave on the outskirts of Springfield, which was accidentally discovered five years ago, is throwing up valuable fossil treasures to researchers. Scientists say that a 6 foot tall bear which had left its claw mark on the cave’s clay bank was the largest bear species that lived in this planet, weighing nearly 1800 pounds and can sprint up to 45 miles per hour, to chase down preys. Much of the remains in the cave possibly date back some 830,000 years ago, with a few possibly dating back over one million years. Some scientists want this cave to be declared as a national treasure. The cave was believed to be sealed with mud and rock for at least 55,000 years before a construction crew blasted a hole on one end of the cave while laying a road in September 2001. Paleontologists believe that this 55,000 year old sealing to the cave has acted as a time capsule to protect the fossil remains within this cave, making this cave one of the rarest in the world.
