Hydrogen: The New Gas or Just Hot Air?

Is hydrogen the new ethanol? CBS News ran a piece on GM's hydrogen car, perpetuating the notion that hydrogen is a "plentiful, clean fuel." There was virtually no discussion of the problems inherent in the production, distribution, and use of hydrogen. The underlying economic costs of developing an entirely new energy production infrastructure are totally ignored.

Even technology similar to current infrastructure has had unexpected consequences. Ethanol production for fuel use increased demand for corn, and government subsidies have created pricing stress on distillers and animal farmers.

Hydrogen as a fuel will likely involve similar tradeoffs with other sources of energy such as electricity.
