Hydrogen: The New Gas or Just Hot Air? Even technology similar to current infrastructure has had unexpected consequences. Ethanol production for fuel use increased demand for corn, and government subsidies have created pricing stress on distillers and animal farmers. Hydrogen as a fuel will likely involve similar tradeoffs with other sources of energy such as electricity.
