Hungarian Citizens Intolerant Of Government Lies

The Associated Press reports that Hungarian citizens erupted in protest, destructive and sometimes violent, when tapes revealed that their Prime Misinister admitted that government officials deliberately misled and directly lied to the public as to the condition of the economy in the effort to gain the advantage during the election season.

According to the Financial Times, many are demanding that the Prime Minister resign. However, at this time, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany is not inclined to do so and has delared his commitment to restoring "public order."

Hungarian president, Laszlo Solyom, as reported by the Voice Of America, "appealed to the country's prime minister to apologize for creating what he calls a "moral crisis" in Hungary."

Well, well, well... the government lied, surprise, surprise. Protesting government lying is good, I guess. Better than apathy, I suppose. A bit like protesting the rain because it is wet, however. Violent protesting is not so good. Nor is it very productive, in the end. After all, even if it achieved a change in the people in charge of the government, it would still be government and it would still lie as necessary to keep power. Far more effective, it seems to me, is to work towards reducing government power and control as a whole, reducing its role and function in public and private life as much as possible.
