How much is too much and how little is not enough? At the same time, we know the dangers. We know it affects our reactions, it causes accidents, and people often don't know when they have reached their limit. Accident statistics attest to the deadly affects of alcohol. And every driver seems to think it only applies to the others. Why is it then that the arguement is not about any alcohol in the blood stream being a crime instead of whether .08 or point .10 should be the limit? Instead of saying we won't accept people endangering the lives of others we talk about how much risk we are willing to accept. We are sending a message to our young people and they are hearing it. They understand we, the adults, are only serious about reducing risk as long as it does not affect OUR fun. Forget the inconvenience of finding a non-drinking driver or waiting until we don't need to drive to start drinking...we are Americans, by thunder, and we are going to drink when we good and well please. Never mind the damage done to those killed by people who thought they knew their limits and killed while impaired. Never mind the lesson that x amount of danger is okay as long as we don;t cross the line to y. Forget the example that knowing something is harmful does not mean we should impose measures strict enough to prevent harm...only strict enough to make sure people are in no condition to drive. The fight against a lower level of blood alcohol content makes little sense at all. In fact, the main problem with it is how high a tolerance we have for allowing ourselves to endanger others o we can have that extra drink at dinner.
