House approves gov't spending website

The U.S. House approved a bill requiring the Office of Management and Budget to create a website to help track how federal money is spent. The bill, sponsored by Senators John McCain and Barack Obama, gives the OMB a little over a year (until 1/1/08) to put together a database and a website allowing users to search by company or state to see what federal grants, loans, contracts, or subcontracts have been awarded.

OMB director Rob Portman is quoted as saying that this "will help cast the bright light of public scrutiny on federal grants and contracts and will help reduce wasteful and ineffective spending." No word on whether the website will include a handy response form for taxpayers to direct (or deny) their contributions to the contractor of their choice. Maybe an "American Idol"-style telephone voting system via 800-number?
