Health Insurance Increases Less....

The smallest increase in health insurance premiums since 1999 was this year. What kind of comfort is that when the increase was 7.7% and still more than twice the rate of inflamation. If you're still paying more than you were what difference does a reduction in the rate of increase mean to you?

Since 2000 health insurance premiums have gone up 87% and wages 20%. Here's a few more figures for you to think about: More than 155 million Americans get health insurance through their jobs. On average employers pick up 84% of the cost for individual 73% for families. Rising costs of health insurance contributes to employers finding it harder and harder to offer health insurance as a benefit to their workers. Since 2000, firms offering health benefits has dropped from 69% to 61%.

The study by Kaiser folllows the Census report which shows that 1.3 million people joined the uninsured in 2005. The long-term trend is clear: health insurance coverage is droppping as a benefit of employment. The overall total cost of health insurance for individuals is now an average of $4,242 a year. For families: $11,480.

What kind of outcomes may come from these trends? Insurance plans may have higher deductibles. Health saving accounts. Insurance for individuals but not the families. No insurance offered.

It's clear that there needs to be changes. But you can't pick any certain one and say that THIS is the answer. It's not just the drug companies. It's not just the insurance companies. It's not just malpractice. It's not just law suits. Something comprehensive needs to take place but I don't know what. Maybe, though if someone would just START somewhere it would get the ball rolling.
