Hardline prevails: No unity-government for now in Palestine

Hamas, once again, proved to be a stumbling block in the formation of a unity government in Palestine. Hamas' hardline on Israel and its insistence not to recognize Israel meant, at least, a temporary freeze in the talks between Hamas and Fatah.

Hamas has refused to honor agreements signed with Israel. However, the immediate trigger that led to suspension of talks seems to be the statements by the Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh to the effect that "under no circumstances will the movement be willing to recognize Israel".

Even after witnessing death and destruction in Lebanon, the defiant posture adopted by Hamas signals the end of any chances of immediate ceasefire to hostilities in the Middle-east. The official line is that the talks will continue after the
United Nations general assembly meeting in New York, but the writing is on the wall. Until Hamas realize that they cannot choose neighbors, the stalemate would continue.
