Happy Birthday Confucius: And you don't look a day over 2,555

HB! CONFUCIUS

Yesterday China celebrated the 2,556th birthday of Confucius. And for the first time they have an "official" image to go with it.

Confucius

This rendition of the patron sage (I like mine better) is actually from the Tang Dynasty which was a mere millennium after his death. What a great marketing tool for the proliferation of the government's Confucius Institutes worldwide that are teaching the Chinese language in cooperation with Universities and host countries.

The funny part of the whole move is: According to the Chinese government, "The statue will be given copyright protection". We would not want any Confucius knock-offs appearing on the shelves of The Great Wallmart, would we?

"A standard portrait is needed so that different countries can have the same image of him," said China's secretary general, Zhang Shuhua.

I am sure glad that is settled. I was sooo losing sleep....

I am a big fan of Confucian sayings, but the man is often the alleged author of silly, and often colorful and even lame sayings. I still remember a host of them from childhood but am too old and embarrassed to repeat them anywhere but here:

War does not determine who is right, war determines who is left

He who sneezes without a handkerchief takes matters into his own hands.

Man who runs behind car get exhausted

Man who jumps off cliff, jumps to conclusion.

You want pretty nurse, you got to be pretty patient.

And here, reprinted from last year, are some real ones. A few of these I am sure you thought were made up by a Chicken Soup... writer, but they are much older:

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Ability will never catch up with the demand for it

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life

In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of

It is easy to hate and it is difficult to love. This is how the whole scheme of things works. All good things are difficult to achieve; and bad things are very easy to get

To see the right and not to do it is cowardice

And YES, he had a sense of humor:

Never give a sword to a man who can't dance

And remember, no matter where you go, there you are

And in closing, my Confucian birthday wish for you:

Wherever you go, go with all your heart...
