Happening not happening in Berlin

Art is a funny thing. At least that’s what I’ve been told. I don’t get art, you see. And I certainly don’t get theater (or theatre, if you prefer), or German theater, at least. I’m not supposed to. It’s genetic. So when a play opens up at Berlin’s venerable Volksbühne about Princess Diana in which the Queen is played by a circus dwarf who likes to salute Hitler and other characters get splattered with animal blood and have their pubic hairs shaved and Diana (played by Jenny Elvers) vomits for 10 minutes straight into a toilet bowl holding a dead rabbit wrapped around her neck, well, who am I to offer any criticism?

At any rate, “Kaprow City”, the latest play by Christoph Schlingensief, Germany’s theater punk number one, is controversial and provocative and getting booed at and everybody’s outraged and upset as usual, blah, blah. It's another great artistic success, in other words.

Now look. Just because everyday folks like you and I (or at least I) don’t get stuff like this, doesn’t necessarily mean that there isn’t anything to get. And besides, art isn’t anything you’re supposed to “get” - this, too, is something else I’ve been told - art is something you “experience”. And this is especially the case if it’s from somebody like Schlingensief. Or at least I have to assume as much.

And although I haven’t the slightest idea what this guy is “about”, I can honestly say that he’s a fascinating character to listen to. At least that’s how I’ve “experienced” him on TV etc. And maybe that’s enough.

So enjoy the play or happening or whatever the hell it is. And don’t explain it to me, either. I don’t want to get it. And that’s probably genetic, too.
