The Government and Your ISP?

Another interesting aspect of the much question, often insulted domestic spying program created by the NSA with the President's approval is its e-mail tracking program. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez is now pitching a new version of this program that he says is aimed at tracking down child pornographers. I have a problem with this kind of sweeping legislation. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone nor aim to protect those that create child pornography. However, I do have a problem with the government putting laws on the books that track my every movement on the internets even if I am not doing anything wrong. The President and his administration has made it clear that they don't care about Americans' privacy, but the only way we can truly avoid becoming a totalitarian state is by making the government use protective channels. In some sense this is like saying every person on the internet is guilty of looking at child pornography, so the government should have access to all of our information. The reality is, the government should have to justify collecting evidence in order to protect those of us who aren't doing anything wrong, and in the "battle against child porn" that is most internet users.

The other problem I have with this idea is the dangers it poses to identity theft. Think about how often a government agent loses a computer with 50,000 social security numbers on it. Could you imagine if someone hacked into this database? Every American would be at risk for identity theft. Not only should we want to keep the government out of our lives, we should want to keep a little mistake of theirs from destroying our financial stability, or compromise our identity to those who would abuse the information.
