German anti-German tendencies getting way out of hand The same thing is going on with the “Anti-Germans” here in Germany these days (except for the annihilation part). Long thought only to exist in the fantastic realm of theoretical physics, there actually exists a group of young, post-Wende (after the fall of the Berlin Wall) “left-wing” Germans who 1) supported the American-led invasion of Iraq, 2) were for Israel’s recent counterattack in Lebanon and 3) believe that there is a direct link between Islamic fascism and the home-grown Nazi fascism their ancestors were kind enough to pass down to them as an itsy-bitsy-little-memento-historical-family-heirloom-keepsake kind of thang. They have even been known to occasionally wave the American flag (Fragezeichen, Fragezeichen). When it wasn’t even on fire, I mean. Needless to say, an anti-Anti-German movement will be cropping up here in no time (what’s Günter Grass been up to these days?) but until a movement like that can paddle out into the mainstream, these guys will have most likely fiddled out all on their own. You know, Einstein’s equation and all that. But it was fun watching for a second or two anyway. Come visit me at Observing Hermann...
