Former Texas Governor Ann Richards Dead at 73

Ann Richards, governor of Texas from 1990-94, died yesterday at the age of 73. It's unfortunate that most of Richards' obits will describe her primarily in relation to the Georges Bush, with both of whom she had some famous dealings (notably dissing the elder at the 1988 Democratic Convention, and losing the governorship to the younger in '94). Richards deserves better; she deserves to be remembered for her contributions to fairness and equality in government. During her reign Texas gained many minorities in positions of power, and in particular she set the standard for female politicians in Texas. Arguably, she helped to champion her constituents on the national stage by showing a degree of class and poise that's at odds with the popular stereotypes of Texans. Even those who opposed her politically had to respect her wit and dedication.
