FORD SAW IT COMING Ford has been having major problems since early 1990's. The managment did not take any corrective action and has waited too long to take remedial measures. Instead of replacing the entire senior management with executives from Honda and Toyota 10 years ago, Ford encouraged the mediocrity to continue. Ford Motor Company was once a great company which produced great cars. But the management basked in the past glory and became too complaisant. The management style was like a government bureaucracy. Ford made series of mistakes over the last few decades. They acquired too many companies in too short a time, they could not integrate the new brands, Ford brand continued to languish and onslaught of Toyota and Hondas continued. The product portfolio had nothing new to offer to the consumer- every new Ford car was a me too product but without the quality of a Japanese car or a Korean car. Then came th firestone debacle. At the time of Firestone debacle Ford's slogan was" quality is Job # 1". Consumers distrusted Ford vehicles, lawsuits piled. Ford lost focus and lost itself. The company thought it can grow through major acquisitions--Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo to mention a few. Ford brand vehicles did not stand for any core value unlike Honda and Toyotas or even Chrysler. Hondas and Toyotas stood for quality, fuel efficiency and reliability. Chrysler stood for innovation and design. But Ford and GM did not stand for anything. Ford had no new products in the portfolio, there was no organic growth and the acquired brands continued to struggle. Finally Bill Ford decided enough is enough and he has to get an outsider to run the company. Will the new remedial measures help Ford to survive?? The remedial measures are unlikely to revive a dying patient. What Ford needs is complete overhaul of entire senior managment including Bill Ford himself and bring in some new and younger blood from Tech industry perhaps Steve Jobs. The company needs some new and reliable products. Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
