First Lady Bush in Clinton's Global Initiative in NYC

Politicians rising above poltics is one of the rarest incidents. But when First Lady Laura Bush speaks on Wednesday in Clinton's Global Initiative Conference, partisan politics takes a backseat for once.

Clinton has famously formed a close friendship with the current president's dad. Clinton has been a repeat guest at the Kennebunkport, Maine, home of George HW Bush and his wife, Barbara. Now Laura joins the league by being the keynote speaker in Clinotn's Conference.

Started last year, the conference brings together government, business and nonprofit sectors to work on the global issues of poverty, religious and ethnic conflict, energy and climate change, and public health. The former President Clinton visualises it as a forum where Americans and citizens of the world can put aside their differences and find common ground. The presence of the First Lady is only a testimony to that.

This year's Clinton Global Initiative is a follow-up to the 2005 event that brought $2.5 billion in pledges to help solve challenges such as the HIV infection in Africa.
