Ethane hunt on Titan yields huge clouds of gas Earlier, methane was found in bulk on Titan, which is believed to have come from the slow erosion of the planet's icy surface into the mostly nitrogen atmosphere. However, the new observations imply that the polar region of Titan is covered in a dense cloud of frozen ethane, most of which precipitates out onto the ground as a solid. Still, liquid ethane has, so far, been proved elusive on Titan. It is believed that excessive cold conditions on Titan prevents defreezing of ethane.
