English-Only Hazelton Approves Revamped Immigration Law The bill seeks to punish companies who hire illegal immigrants, as well as landlords who rent to them. Mayor Louis J. Barletta has been adamant in asserting that "The City of Hazleton is empowered and mandated by the people of Hazleton to abate the nuisance of illegal immigration by aggressively prohibiting and punishing the acts, policies, people and businesses that aid and abet illegal aliens . . ." The new law seeks to avoid challenges by using Federal agency data to determine the status of a worker or tenant, and by giving a grace period before taking away a business' license or fining landlords. Coverage in the local broadcast news as often focused on the impact to individuals, and has not considered the underlying issues of a wave of drug-related crime or the cost of multi-lingual municipal operations. Both are costs paid only by native or documented residents. Local opposition to the bill seems muted. A protest rally had only 300 participants, out of an estimated 25% of the city's population who may be undocumented.
