Earth was much warmer 50 million years ago! About 49 to 56 million years ago, the Earth was much warmer than what it is right now, according to a new research. By burning all the fossil fuels available on earth, we would still not be able to increase the global temperatures to the levels that were prevalent some 49 million years ago. The carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere was around 1125 PPM some 49- 56 million years ago. Recent estimates show that the Co2 level in the atmosphere today is around 380 PPM and in the worst scenario (caused by higher Co2 emissions) it may not exceed 1000 PPM. Carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere has increased considerably from 280 PPM (before the Industrial Revolution) to its current level of 380 PPM. A compound called nahcolite and halite found as a 1000 foot thick layer in the Piceance Creek Basin in Colorado might have been formed in the early Eocene epoch. Higher carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere might have crystallized this compound, which would have then dropped to the bottom of the salt lakes, as in this case. This proves that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was much higher in the Eocene epoch.
