Don't pigeonhole the Rock

The classic view of a professional wrestler is some drooling, spitting, shouting, tattood angry man spewing forth threats towards any and all who might get in his way, selling as true sport a scripted event. For years their fans are expected to be tobacco dripping, toothless wonders in baseball caps who probably rolled up to the arena in a liften pick-up with a rifle rack in the window and beer cans rolling around in the truck bed.
The problem is...that picture is inaccurate. Take for example The Rock, a former wrestler turned actor. Wrestling fans bought into his "smart" character when he wrestled and followed him into the movies. From his surprisingly strong appearance in the Mummy franchise to his "based on real events" remake of Walking Tall, fans have experienced the skills he honed in the ring; showmanship, timing, and a feel for how to move and talk in ways the fans want to see. In the oft-played clip where he tells the young men, "Even though you are locked up, you are still somebody." Long-time fans instantly recognize the charisma that made him one of the most popular stars in recent wrestling history.
It is too easy to dismiss potentially strong actors due to their past. While The Gridiron Gang is unlikely to smash box office records it has the potential to be a fun, feel-good story of redemption from a questionable past and a second chance at life. I will let you decide if that refers to the movie...or The Rock.
