Dog Day Afternoon, Redoux There may be two or maybe three hostages in the vault… the longer it goes on, the longer the hostage taker has to calm down, and reassess the situation, the better the chances for a good outcome. Which is a nerve-wracking thought for the bank employees stuck in a vault with the nervous little twerp who possibly has seen too many old movie re-runs. A long time ago, when I thought I might make a commissioned career in the USAF, I was taking a lot of graduate level courses for a masters’ in administration, and one of the courses I wound up in was a course in terrorism… theory, not practice, but the professor who taught it had a nice side-line going, doing seminars for police departments. The professor and some of his grad students with a bent for the theatrical would dress up as terrorists, take half the seminar attendees hostage, and demand that the other half negotiate the release of the party of the first part. The class turned out to be extraordinarily relevant as I completed it about three weeks before the takeover of the American Embassy in Teheran in 1979. And it was a pure marvel how everything that professor told us, was played out for real. One of those things we were told, if ever taken hostage in a group… is not to stand out. Don’t put yourself forward, don’t call their attention to yourself in the first few minutes, hours or whatever. If they’re going to make an example of someone, it will be someone who they have noticed. Try to be unnoticeable. In a crowd of two or three, that’ll be a bit of a challenge.
