DNA Evidence Frees Man After 16 Years Deskovic was originally convicted with the help of his confession to the police. His lawyer at the time argued the confession was coerced and presented the DNA evidence to the jury. Deskovic was convicted anyway and sentenced to 15 years to life. The Innocence Project took up his case and had more sophisticated DNA testing done. The new tests matched DNA from the crime scene to another inmate already serving a life sentence for murder.
