Digital Literacy The study shows that 67% of white school children has access to the internet, while only 44% of Hispanic and 47% of African American have easy access. How can this be? Our schools are all wired, our students have access to computers. The problem is not in the school, the problem is in the home. As a parent myself it became very clear in the mid 90's that a child would be disadvantaged if they did not have access to a computer at home. The school that my son and daughter attended made it abundantly clear that homework was expected to be completed using a word processor. A decade later I am convinced that this is now the norm, and not just a fad of the affluent San Diego school district. The problem is not in the school system, it is clear that the government has made great strides to remove the digital divide in this area, the problem is in the home. There seems to be a direct correlation between digital literacy and earning power, a Canadian study in 2002 showed that families earning $60,000 or more a year were twice as likely to have internet access than a family earning $30,000. This is a vicious circle, how can we fix this disparity? Simon Barrett Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
