DDT to be used in the fight against Malaria

The World health Organization has sanctioned the use of DDT to control malaria in Africa. DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is an organic compound, which is commercially used as a pesticide around the world. In 1960 DDT was blamed for affecting the eggshells of some local breed birds. It made the eggs less thick, which reduced the probability of a successful hatch with dire consequences on the local population of these birds. This issue still lurks in the mind of many environmentalists, who believe that the use of DDT could affect the environment.

DDT was banned in Africa after the European Union and the U.S pressurized to do so by threatening to ban agriculture imports from Africa, if DDT usage was not stopped. Now with nearly a million people dying every year because of malaria across Africa, WHO has finally given a nod for the indoor use of DDT. Greenpeace, who are against the usage of DDT, could not stop this approval; in spite of the pressure they applied on the European and U.S governments to stop this sanction.
