The Crescent and the Cross

Politics and religion are two very, very easy ways to get people angry. Attack their closest beliefs and you threaten what sets them apart as an individual. And emotion often overrides logic. People will defend adamantly their beliefs, even if there is no purpose to the defense.
Add to the already volatile situation a shared history that included Crusades and Holy Wars over the course of multiple centuries and you have created the potential for disaster. In today's politically correct society it is unthinkable someone might say something true but hurtful, yet that is exactly what Pope Benedict XVI managed to do. Naturally, to demonstrate the inaccuracy of his remarks regarding the violence Mohammed brought to the table, modern day followers of Mohammed responded with violence in the form of bombs.
The irony of the leader of a church with a long history of violence in the name of religion pointing out another religion with a long history of violence seems like the set-up for a punchline. No doubt if someone on the world stage were to reference the murders of the Albigenses or Huguenots the Catholic world would also take exception.
That is unfortunate because in both the case of the words of Benedict and the words of whoever referenced the Crusades against Protestants, the facts of the case are indisputable. Killing in the name of religion and to spread the religion was a tool used by both the Catholics and the Muslims. Instead of objecting to truth it would be a better idea to change the way people think.
I fail to understand how people can claim to follow the Bible which uses concepts such as "The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self control..." (Galatians 5:22) and The Golden Rule, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, I fail to understand how followers of that justify killing in the name of God or even country. It is not as if there is a shortage of unbelievers willing to fulfill the roles of soldiers yet people constantly reject the tenents of religion as written but defend vociferously the concepts of religion that have become traditionally important.
I do not mean to make light of the remarks. They could not help but inflame an already troubling situation, yet their truth cannot be denied. And that denial is just as troubling.
