Crashed Brazilian Passenger Airliner Located in the Amazon GOL Airlines went into operation in Brazil at the beginning of 2001, modeling itself after Southwest Airlines in both its choice of aircraft (the Boeing Next-Generation 737) and it's no-frills service that allowed it to offer relatively inexpensive air fare. Since that ambitious beginning, the airline started serving destinations outside of Brazil, offering service to Buenos Aires and Panama. Their strategy worked! In 2005, GOL was named the "best airline in Latin America" by Global Finance Magazine and, until now, their safety record was untarnished. On Friday afternoon, Brazilian flight controllers lost radar contact with the GOL Boeing 737-800 registered as Flight 1907. Since then the search was intensive and early this morning the crash was confirmed. Seventy family members, so far, are waiting at the Brasilia airport until news of the fate of their relatives is released. Earliest reports of this incident connect the GOL airliner crash with a smaller, executive jet that was forced to land in Cachimbo, Brazil after colliding with a larger plane. Brazilian authorities now seem to have discredited this possibility.
