Couples 'screening' embros for gender With stem cell research as controversial as it is, that's kind of a crucial point. Curing severe diseases is a much more compelling reason to destroy embryos than sex selection is. People from countries like China and Canada, both of which ban the practice of PGD (the term for this type of screening) for gender selection, come to the U.S. to get it. I think there's a very compelling case for defining life as beginning sometime after the embryo stage -- oftentimes, embryos naturally fail to implant in a woman's uterus and die with no human interference anyway, so it seems absurd to equate one with a human life. That line of reasoning doesn't excuse the AP for skirting the issue, though. Robert VerBruggen blogs at robertsrationale.blogspot.com.
