A Coup Accomplete? It would appear, from this distance at least, that the coup is pretty much accomplished and accepted… if the King has no bones to pick, then roll out the new administration. Most of the news stories imply that Thaksin Shinawatra is politically unpopular as well as notoriously corrupt. One is left to wonder if the small ongoing Muslim insurgency in southern Thailand where Moslems are a significant minority might have affected some of the anti-Shinawatra feeling. Teachers and local administrators have been targeted, as well as local merchants who are ordered by militant Moslems to cease doing business on Fridays. (Insert portentous newscaster voice here, and imagine me standing with a microphone in front of a large building, like the State Department, or the Thai Embassy, or someplace) All the available news and blogger reports seem to suggest that all is quiet on the Thai front, but is it quiet because it is really quiet, or quiet before a storm?
