Congress: Deal with the real issues of illegal immigration Whatever band-aid bill gets passed in this season of politics, it is time at last to deal with the problem at large: While we don’t want illegal immigration into this country, our current society relies on the labor of illegal aliens. If you doubt that, look at the troubles that farmers are having this fall. There have been repeated stories of fields that are being plowed under because there are not enough migrant workers this year – the housing construction boom has created higher-paying jobs, leaving the fields empty of laborers when they are needed to harvest. Granted, not all migrant workers are in this country illegally – but a large percentage are. So like it or not, be you Republican or Democrat, it can be agreed that we have a problem that will not be solved by fences or voter-identification. One front of this battle is with wages vs. consumer cost. Many jobs held by illegal immigrants rely on this cheap labor to retain low consumer prices. If we replace low-cost labor with legal help, the employers are going to need to raise their prices – something we all will face at the cash register. If we are not going to do this, then we reach the second front in the battle: how do we safely accept these workers into out midst? Can we open our borders in a way that allows us to check who is coming in – so we allow the migrant farmer but not the wily terrorist? It is time for Congress to deal with this subject – not in a high-visibility campaign arena, but a down-and-dirty effort to deal with the whole issue. Decide if we are going to tolerate illegal aliens. If we are, then figure out a way to increase America’s safety. If we are not going to tolerate them, then how do we replace them – and deal with the increased costs of groceries, wine, construction, etc. etc. etc?
