Chulanont rumored to be next Thai PM

A Thai government official, Auditor General Jaruvan Maintaka, said Thursday night that the ruling junta had chosen a respected retired general, Surayud Chulanont, who is close to the royal palace as the interim civilian prime minister while a new constitution is written, but backed off her comments on Friday.

Surayud is widely seen as the most suitable choice in the current situation. The formal announcement is expected to come over the weekend with the approval by King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The interim government is to hold office until a new constitution is drawn and a new parliament is elected according to the coup leaders.
