Centrist Politics, or, A King Size Bed for Koch, Lieberman and Bloomberg Here is an interesting study in centrist politics, aisle crossing, King Size bed snuggling of strange political bedfellows and what it points to for the future of American Politics. Fox News (www.fox.com) and The New York Post (www.post.com) carry articles about New York City (R) Mayor Bloomberg's intention of co-hosting with (D) former Mayor Ed Koch, a fundraiser with brand spanking new Independent Joe Leiberman. Hm? What a fantastical party that should be. What is the motivation? Unity? Proof that the big three of political parties can nest, raise money and overcome? Overcome what? Our political parties exist for a reason - we have different beliefs, values, ideas about what Our America should be. And that is good. That is what the country was founded on right? Disagreement and the right to it? Margaret Carlson, in her August 10th, 2006 column "one way to read this [Lieberman/Lamont] election is that Democrats are fed up with the bipartisanship that gets the wrong things done." (www.bloomberg.com) She goes on to site how the democrats are the ones practicing nonpartisan politics under the perhaps incorrect aegis of public opinion, while the republicans use nonpartisan-ship to martial through their agenda on the backs of weak democrats. I am paraphrasing. Read the article decide for yourself, I happen to agree with her. Back to our bedfellows: Bloomberg, Lieberman and Koch. The fundraiser is scheduled for November 1st at Bloomberg's Manhattan townhouse. Dan Gerstein, a spokesman for Lieberman's campaign, said "Senator Lieberman is extremely grateful to Mayor Bloomberg for being so generous with his time," Gerstein said. "The mayor is renowned as a leader who puts people ahead of politics and gets things done for his constituents and his support and validation mean a lot to our campaign." Of course the Republican Mayor puts people before politics when it will keep democrats from recovering congress. It will be interesting to watch the developments between our three slumberpartiers in the time leading up to their November 1 non-partisan yet surely partisan hootenanny. www.fox.com www.nypost.com www.bloomberg.com Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
