Casualties In Iraq Officially Surpass 9/11 Casualities

Last Friday marked a milestone in the War in Iraq as the death of a yet to be identified solider marked the 2,974th death of a US solider in the Middle East. That number officially puts the number of US military dead one ahead of the number of civilians killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack. While historians all agree that people cannot judge the success or failure of a military campaign by the number of dead compared to the number of dead in the event that led the country into the conflict, most of them do agree that if there is enough doubt to even bring up the exact number of dead and feel the need to discuss it, than something is seriously wrong. Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Boston University, had this to say on the subject "There's never a good war but if the war's going well and the overall mission remains powerful, these numbers are not what people are focusing on, if this becomes the subject, then something's gone wrong."
