Case of the dying lions Crossbreeding of different species of lions created about 80 lions that could never have made it in the bush or jungle... but, wait, that would never have happened in the wild anyway. What were they thinking? This hybrid species had too weak hind legs and it was obvious within a few years that the experiment just didn't work. They are waiting for the old hybrids to die out before they mate pure Asian lions. I have yet to figure out what the experiment was actually trying to accomplish. The zoo officials bred Asian lions with African circus lions... they were certainly prolific, but the cubs were not healthy. It seems to me that they (who are they anyway?) that they would have figured that out quickly enough that the other 80 or so cubs would never have been born. While this story is interesting, the moral implications are much deeper. Dogs have weathered the cross breeding process quite well, so have domestic cats... larger species have not, but that has not stopped scientists from cloning sheep and cats. When will we ever learn?
