Bush plans to declassify NIE report

On Saturday the New York Times reported that a National Intelligent Estimate "attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee" and "asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe."

In response (usatoday), the President plans to declassify part of the report. He says "Some people have guessed what's in the report and concluded that going into Iraq was a mistake... I strongly disagree."

But the "some people" the President refers to are "several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document" according to the New York Times.

It would be easy to say this is a group of political hacks capitalizing on a proximity to the midterm elections, but it is just as likely that this is a group of people who felt the reports released on 9/11 (state.gov) and last Wednesday (pdf) were disingenuous and needed to be responded to by an official (if classified) source.

What is important is that an authoritative account of the global terror situation is coming to light. It will be interesting to see how it is used.
