Borderlands And about time, too… for a lot of people who live along the border, the whole thing has just gotten stupendously out of hand in over the last decade, especially so in recent years. It has always been a fairly fluid region, a lot of movement back and forth, and not all impoverished job seekers: a lot of upper-class Mexican nationals have second homes in San Antonio, and in Houston, and other major cities, and during Holy Week, the regional up-scale malls are wall-to wall crowded with Mexican shoppers. San Antonio and other Texas cities are major shopping destinations, and it works the other way as well. A lot of Americans always used to drop down to Nueva Laredo, or Tijuana, take a holiday in Baha, or Guadalajara, and build a second home in Ensenada… the legitimate border traffic is still there, and will always be there, but the irregular stuff is getting way out of hand. I’ve read in the local papers, of interviews with local ranchers who used to turn a blind eye towards the job-seekers heading north. They used to give them water, for the border-crossers then were polite, non-threatening, and seemingly as harmless as migratory birds, passing through. But these days, the ranchers and their families don’t leave their houses after dark, and carry weapons at all times. The border-crossers are coming in droves, are careless about fences and gates, steal stuff and leave mountains of trash, and are increasingly aggressive and inclined to be violent. This will come to a head, and it will definitely be unpleasant. Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
