Bless You, Bill Clinton! Yes, that’s right. I said it. I’ll say it again: Bless you, Bill Clinton for pushing your agenda! The Clinton Global Initiative surpassed its goal of $2.5 billion dollars quite handsomely, wrapping up Friday with commitments worth about $7.3 billion. It was especially successful due to Richard Branson of the Virgin Group committing $3 billion towards renewable energy initiatives. The 3-day event, which was raising money and developing plans to combat illness, poverty, religious and ethnic conflict and climate change throughout the world, has even managed to get Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to initiate a 5-year plan to reduce the amount of packaging used in its products. Sure, it is probably for entirely selfish reasons because its profit margins are narrowing and its under pressure to provide better benefits for its employees, but for whatever reasons, any step these large companies are willing to make towards reducing pollution is a win. Lets face it folks, even if global warming isn’t the reason why our weather is going all haywire and the ice caps and glaciers are melting, we still have to live here. Plastic packaging not only overflows our landfills but, litters our highways, rivers and oceans. Oil and coal are not renewable resources, they will not be around forever, and quite frankly we’re going to have to figure out another way of life, preferably before the supplies run out. On top of that, air pollution from cars and smokestacks are major causes of diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and other heart and lung ailments. It is good to see that there are steps being taken in the right direction to make the world a healthier place to live. We’re smart. We have technology and Bill Clinton on our side. We can adapt to a different way of life and forward-thinking planning such as these will make it that much easier.
