Bird Flu virus is mutating! Mike Perdue, a World Health Organization scientist, has warned that H5N1strain of avian flu virus, which has killed 150 people worldwide and decimated the poultry industry in many countries, is starting to show signs of mutation, which could make this virus resistant to drugs like Tamiflu and vaccines that might be developed to control the spread of this virus. H5N1 strain unlike the common flu virus does not have the ability to transmit from humans to humans, but any mutations in the strain that could enhance the virus to acquire this ability, which may have dire effects on the human society. Scientists also fear that they will not be able to develop vaccines which could act as a long-term defense against the disease, if the strain starts to mutate frequently. The rapid spread of this strain across the world had already raised serious concerns about a pandemic that is only a few ‘mutations’ away.
