Ban Ki-Moon confident as U.S. envoy presses for decision on UN chief selection

In an AP interview, the South Korean frontrunner to replace Kofi Annan as UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, said he hopes to get support from all 15 Security Council nations in Thursday's informal poll.

In the last straw poll, where council members chose among three choices — "encourage," "discourage" or "no opinion" — Ban came out on top. Fourteen countries encouraged him to remain in the race, and one discouraged him.

The 15-member UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a straw poll on Thursday, the third since late July, among the seven officially announced candidates. This would be a keenly watched development as the US envoy to the United Nations, John Bolton, pressed on for a decision on the selection of the next secretary-general to lead the world body.

In the aftermath of this straw poll, we could very well see a large-scale withdrawal of nominations - a befitting finale to a truly democratic exercise!
