Astonishment, dismay at Musharraf revelation Armitage denied conveying the message, saying that he never had the authority to make such a demand. Bush was "taken aback" by the revelation. Comments of Pakistani people broadcast on the BBC this morning ranged from criticism of both Bush and Musharaff, to outright chest-thumping. It is unclear what the Pakistani leader hoped to accomplish with such an inelegant tactic. Maybe he was thinking of Richard Nixon when he recalled the encounter with Armitage. BBC coverage here.
