Assimilation noun: The merging of cultural traits from previously distinct cultural groups. There's always that one percent, and they're the ones that always make the most noise. Some Muslim leaders who no longer live in Islamic countries are up in arms over the horror of having to adapt. Public comments by two top politicians in the country these Muslims have decided to call 'home' have met with fury and outrage. The comments have already brought forth warnings of possible rioting and violence, and both politicians have been accused of fostering racism and discrimination. Obviously someone has stepped way out of bounds here, especially when you consider that the comments were not clandestinely uttered behind someone's back, but instead were proclaimed in the midst of a public interview. The gist of the comments can be summed up like this - 1 - If you want to live and thrive in this country, you have to,at the very least, learn to speak English. 2 - If you want to integrate with our communities, you have to accept our values. 3 - If, in your previous homeland, women were treated as less than equals, that's not the case here. 4 - We welcome immigrants who are willing to become citizens, and are enthusiastic to do so. 5 - No matter what you experienced in your native land,we invite you join us and start again, with a common set of values, and a common language. How's that for some heavy duty rabble-rousing? No wonder certain clerics are all up in arms. How can power be maintained over the masses if the masses are treated as equals? This is blasphemy in its most degenerate form. It's also not politically correct, which is why you didn't hear this speech emanating from Washington DC. The comments were made intially by John Howard, and backed up by Peter Costello. If you're not readily familiar with those names, Howard is the Prime Minister of Australia, and Costello heads the Australian Federal Treasury. I say three cheers for the Aussies...
