Armitage to Pakistan: Talk or we'll bomb

Pakistani leader General Pervez Musharraf said that former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage threatened to bomb Pakistan "back to the stone age" unless they cooperated with 9/11/2001-related intelligence gathering. White House officials declined to comment on the CBS report.

This may finally explain why Bin Laden was not pursued when he slipped out of Afghanistan and into Paki territory. The heartbreaking escape of the Al Queda leader is detailed in the book "Jawbreaker" by Gary Bernsten.

Many pundits in both parties have long questioned the level of Pakistani support. Cheney and Armitage both have made pilgrimages to shake loose intelligence.

The administration silence on the subject is likely due to ongoing efforts. Critics seeking conspiracy theories or evidence of administration incompetence should look elsewhere.
