Are you pulling your hair ‘compulsively’ – blame it on your genetics! A research team at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, says that they have identified a gene, which could help scientists in understanding Trichotillomania (an impulse control disorder which is characterized by a repeated urge to pull out scalp hair). The team says that mutations in the gene SLITKR1 are very much linked to Trichotillomania. About 3-5% of the population is affected by this disorder, which results in considerable loss of hair that might lead baldness. The lead investigator of this study said that disorders like Trichotillomania are often blamed on a person’s life experiences or upbringing. He added that the society’s perceptions on mental disorders like Trichotillomania can only be changed by providing information on the genetic origin of such disorders. Genetic linkage can also help in help in better diagnosis of these disorders to develop effective therapies to treat them.
