Another new German angst in the oven A German brain researcher (put snide remark here) has published a really, really scary book called, get ready, “Computer Addicted” (Computersüchtig) in which he explains that the excessive use of “new media” will leave deep traces in your innocent child’s brain. It will even do so in that less innocent child’s brain of yours, uh, his/hers. He wouldn’t say exactly where in their brains these deep traces will be left because he wants you to buy the book you see, but you can bet that just by using the term “deep traces in your brain” he will already have helped you decide to do so. To buy his book, I mean. Am I confusing you yet? In other words, if you’re a teen and/or kid who sends out tons of text messages (SMS) or sits in front of the computer for more than, uh, a long time every day, the structure of your brain will be irreparably damaged or something. All these new-media-zombies have to do then is just see a computer and their eyes get all glassy-looking and they lose control of their lower body functions and they get pulled into this horrible matrix thingy controlled by advertising executives and cell phone and computer gaming company CEOs and oh my god we’re all gonna die! This guy even goes on and writes about the building of little “Autobahns” in these kids’ brains. Autobahns? I mean, how sinister is that? We all remember who built the Autobahns in the first place, right? You see, every hour that one of these kids spends sitting addicted in front of the computer – he (this Dr. Strangelove guy) estimates that there are 100,000 of them in Germany – is one hour less he or she spends in the real world. Damn, I never thought about it quite like that. I thought I was already doing this with the "old media". And I'm not even a kid. I have to start spending more time in front of the computer, too.
