Ann Richards, former Texas Governor, dies at 73 "Ann loved Texas, and Texans loved her" said President Bush upon news of her death. He had close connections to Richards, having beaten her in a 1994 race for Governor of Texas. The moment that Richards is most remembered for by the American public also had ties to the Bush family. As the keynote speaker at the 1998 Democratic Convention, Ann said of George H.W. Bush "Poor George, he can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." Richards, the first woman governor of Texas in 50 years, opened the door for female and black politicians, appointing many of each to high positions. She lobbied hard for NAFTA, greatly enlarged the Texas prison system, and typically had strong support of the Texas people throughout her term. Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry described Richards as "the epitome of Texas politics: a figure larger than life who had a gift for captivating the public with her great wit."
