And the Torture Continues...

An editorial today in the Washington Post clarifies the recent legislation pushed past the dissenters in congress. Essentially, the President can continue to torture for the sake of prosecuting the so-called "war on terror." The implications go beyond chasing down members of al Qaeda. This law would permit the use of evidence obtained through torture in military tribunals. Much of this law crosses over into the standard American justice system as well. The next logical step is torturing American citizens for information about crimes. These tactics are even more suspect given the myth of the ticking time bomb. I also question these tactics considering that the impetus for the President's disclosure of the rendition prisons in Europe was the CIA's refusal to continue using torture for interrogation. Amnesty International has an interesting perspective on this program too.

One thing that bothers me about these "alternative coercive interrogation techniques" is that no one seems to talk about what exactly they are. This is a spin tactic all its own created to get the American public to think that this isn't torture, but really just interrogation methods. Just for the record: waterboarding is torture. The President needs to stop tarnishing the name of the American people, tarnishing our history, and bringing us down to the same level as the terrorists we are supposedly superior to.

I see one thing missing in the post above, as is the case with most opinions of this type, an effective, alternate, method of interrogation [key word being 'effective']. Would it be the "Please... pretty please" avenue to gathering information, or should interrogation be outlawed altogether?

To dust off a tired old saying that applies more and more today, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
