The Affordability Or Not Of Illness -- Affecting More, As Health Insurance Increases As the Chicago Sun Times points out, that increase is about twice the rate of inflation. Dr. Drew Altman, president and chief executive officer of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a health care research organization that annually tracks the cost of health insurance, according to the report, notes that "the rising gap between premium growth and wages is particularly startling when one takes a longer look back. Since 2000, health insurance premiums have gone up 87 percent; wages 20 percent." The New York Daily News quotes Altman as saying "it's worth observing that this survey comes out on the heels of the Census report showing that we added 1.3 million people to the ranks of the uninsured in 2005," he said. "The long-term trend is very clear, and it's the slow unraveling of coverage in the employment-based system, especially among smaller employers." Indeed, that is one reason for under-employment. It is more affordable for employers to have a team of part-timers that are not benefit eligible than to deal with the mess created by work place health insurance regulations. Outrageous cash prices for health care are directly related to the insurance system. It is absolute insanity, making it more affordable to go to other countries to have work done, such as dental work, with it becoming increasingly popular to travel to another country for operations, both cosmetic and necessary, as well. And, we're all familiar with the cheaper prescription drugs in Canada and Mexico situation. We've got a fine, fine mess here to sort out.
